The Mission Statement 

A commitment to provide high quality state-of-art peridontics health care system, which includes optimal oral health promotion, oral disease prevention and to encourage innovations in response to changing demographics and oral health needs of the people of the country along with to achieve academic excellence with active research and creative endeavors to meet the needs of widely dispersed and high-diverse population.

The Department 

Periodontics is a specialized discipline of dentistry, which deals with health and disease of the supporting structures of teeth and oral mucous membrane. Our Department of Periodontics, aspires to be recognized as one of the best department in Periodontics through outstanding leading edge educational programs and excellence in patient care. Currently, undergraduate students are getting extensive theoretical and clinical training of Periodontics in the department as a part of curriculum through third year to internship.

The department has developed following the ďStandard Operating ProceduresĒ with a far sited visionary approach for every sector of the department which mainly includes the well spacious and well illuminated under graduate and post graduate clinics with adequate number of dental chairs having all required accessories, well equipped minor operation theater with attached acclimatization clean chamber, sterilization room and post operative care unit; residentís room, seminar hall with all modern audio-visual aids, departmental library, faculty chambers hooked-up with online internet facility of the college, large patientís waiting lounge with sufficient number of chairs.

The Curriculum

Periodontics as a course curriculum in the undergraduate program is designed to provide a strong theoretical and clinical background in Periodontics enabling the students to treat all forms of periodontal disease on a biologically rationale basis. The students becomes thoroughly familiar with the periodontal literature and receives broad clinical experiences in examination, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and maintenance of the patients, advanced periodontal diseases are also being treated utilizing current concepts in the etiology, pathogenesis and patient management. Student are also getting training on critical evaluation of pertinent literature; communication effectively with dental colleagues, other health professionals and patients.

Apart from their routine clinical cases, assignments are given to all final year students to make either posters, chart or models on various topics for patient education and motivation, also seminar presented by them are done regularly on power point as a part of their academic curriculum.

Beside the commitment to provide high quality periodontal health care, facilities of the department are engaged in the active research and other activities for the innovations in response to changing demographics and oral health needs of the people of the country, which is rewarding in terms of research publications in National and International Journals of high repute and many professional recognitions.

The Continuing Education Program 

Continuing Education Program is also integral part of the activities in the department, which provides periodontal education to promote high-quality periodontal practice to the students and dental professionals. A tentative list of such programs for year 2006-07 is given hereunder.

  • Periodontal update for the general practitioner.
  • Geriatric periodontal needs.
  • Periodontal regenerative procedures.
  • Periodontal aesthetic and plastic surgeries.
  • Scientific communication writing in dental research.

Facilities and Services Available in the Department 

Department of Periodontics is, one amongst the best departments in the college, because of many reasons like, full fledged team of seasoned and outstanding faculties with best possible harmony, well-designed spacious and well-illuminated infrastructure, outstanding classroom teaching and extensive hand-on clinical exposure of students on big number of variety of periodontal patients along with noble and innovative approaches for widening of the scope. Few of the facilities available and services rendered by the department are summarized hereunder.

The Infrastructure  

A fully operational building with capacious and well illuminated under graduate and post graduate clinics with adequate number of dental chairs having all required accessories like Ultrasonic Scalers, Electrocautery Units, entire range of HU-Friedy hands instruments, etc., well equipped minor operation theater with attached acclimatization clean chamber, sterilization room and post operative care unit; residentís room, seminar hall with all modern audio-visual aids, department library, faculty chamber hooked-up with online internet facility of the College, large patientís waiting lounge with sufficient number of chairs. The department is having all required consumable items along with latest graft materials and membranes.

The Patient Care 

As a policy matter, all through FREE OF COST treatment including consultation, diagnostic, non-surgical and surgical procedure are provided to all the patients. Department run OPD for six days/week, starting early in the morning by 8.30 am. A proper attention with maximum possible personal touch to every patient is our commitment and policy charter; resultant that, a regular accelerated upsurge in the department with the chief complains of bleeding gums, pus discharges, swollen gingival, tooth mobility, mucogingival problems, bad breath, food lodgment, gummy smile, black pigmented gingival, etc. Following treatments are provided in department:

Non-Surgical Procedures 

  1. Scaling (supra and sub-gingival),
  2. Root planting,
  3. Local drug delivery,
  4. Splinting, etc.

Surgical periodontal procedures

  1. Various types of flap surgeries,
  2. Periodontal plastic/aesthetic surgeries, and
  3. Regenerative procedures using graft materials, membranes and growth factors, etc.

Beside the commitment to provide high quality state-of-the-art periodontal health care system, department also has all the primary facilities to carryout active research and other activities like, continuing education program for the innovation in response to changing demographics and oral health needs of the people of the country.
