World No Tobacco Day is celebrated on 31st May every year. This year’s theme was “Protect the Environment”. On this occasion, Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology conducted an educative and awareness program in the form of a questionnaire-based survey for all the patients visiting the department. The questionnaire included 10 questions assessing the knowledge and awareness of the ill effects of tobacco on health and environment. It was distributed among the patients to assess their knowledge for the same. The aim of the event was to educate the people that Tobacco kills over 8 million people every year globally. All forms of tobacco, both smoke and smokeless are harmful and there is nothing such as safe level of tobacco exposure.
Recently researches have shown that smoking tobacco is causing devastating damage to environment and to ecosystem. Even tobacco farming causes massive use of water, large-scale deforestation and contamination of the air and water systems (cigarettes and e-cigarettes waste) thereby also leading to global warming. It endangers planet causing unnecessary added pressure to its already limited natural resources by polluting it and thereby damaging the overall health of the people.
The patients were further examined to assess the damages already caused on their health due to tobacco consumption. The event continued for 1 week which was followed by a lucky draw contest and the winner was felicitated with a gift hamper.
It was attended by 138 participants. The program was appreciated by all and was a huge success.
Good work
