Prevention of periodontal disease progression is the primary goal of periodontal therapy. Local antimicrobial agents have been used as adjunct to conventional therapy in chronic periodontitis patients, producing encouraging results. Tetracycline fibers are low-dose controlled-release delivery system for the treatment of periodontal infections. Local delivery of antimicrobial agents is becoming more prevalent since it leads to higher concentration of the drug at the intended site of action using a lower dose with an associated reduction in side effects relative to systemic administration. Local route of drug delivery provides direct access to the systemic circulation through the jugular vein bypassing the first pass hepatic metabolism leading to high bioavailability. Other advantages include excellent accessibility, low enzymatic activity, painless administration.
