The advent of Aesthetic solutions to Orthodontic problems started with a greater number of adult patients reporting to the clinics for treatment. Lingual orthodontics thus, came to the fore. The research on Lingual Orthodontics started with Dr. Kinja Fujita of the Kanagawa Dental University,Japan in 1967.In the 1975 Dr.Craven Kurz of UCLA desgined lingual brackets with and inclined plane to convert the shearing force into compressive force. The difficulties being encountered during development of the lingual appliance were tissue irritation and speech difficulties, gingival impingement, occlusal interference, decisions on appliance prescription and bonding of the brackets.
Seven generations of the Lingual appliances have been introduced. The Seventh Generation was developed bt Ormco Corp in 1990. These are refined , low profile, patient friendly brackets. There is a horizontal Slot for wire placement of .018 and .022 slot size. The bite plane is placed parallel to the archwire and occlusal plane.
The ideal archwire has a mushroom shape, this is due to the constriction of the arch width that occurs as one proceeds distally from the lingual surface of the canine to the bicuspid.
Lingual appliances are more effective than labial appliance in achieving intrusion of anterior teeth and maxillary arch expansion.
The future of lingual orthodontics is dependent on advances in technology related to appliance design and laboratory procedures.
