What does nitrous oxide do?

Inhaling nitrous oxide creates an intense sensation of euphoria and relaxation, spreading numbness through the body like a welcome distraction. It’s administered through a small mask placed over the child’s nose.

Even though nitrous oxide does not eliminate pain, it increases the child’s pain threshold, making procedures more tolerable.



Quick recovery

Unlike other forms of sedation, the effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly. Children can resume their normal activities shortly after the procedure.



Noninvasive

Administering nitrous oxide is noninvasive and does not require needles or injections, which can be particularly beneficial for children with needle phobias.

Potential risks and considerations-

Though nitrous oxide is generally safe, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. Saraswati Dental College’s Pediatric Dentistry Department review the child’s medical history to identify any potential contraindications, such as respiratory issues or certain medications.

If your child doesn’t have any contraindications, our team then provides specific instructions regarding eating and drinking before the appointment to minimize the risk of nausea. As long as your child follows these instructions, nitrous oxide is a safe choice for dental sedation.

Although rare, some children may have an allergic reaction to nitrous oxide. We are trained to handle such situations promptly.
