Department of Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge , SDC&H conducted an academic program on “Sleep Medicine & its treatment options including Mandibular Advancement Devices" under the Capability Enhancement and Development Scheme(Professional Development) of SDC&H in collaboration with Indian Prosthodontic Society (Head office, U.P. State chapter) on 14th February 2025(Friday).
The external resource person of the day was Dr. Supriya Singh (Director, Sleep Disorder & Research Centre, Michael E, DeBakey Veteran Affairs Medical Centre, Houston, Texas & Assistant Professor, Pulmonary Critical Care & Sleep Medicine, Program Director, Sleep Medicine Fellowship, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas).
Dr. Supriya Singh, a distinguished expert in sleep medicine, delivered a comprehensive lecture with her extensive experience that includes her role as the Sleep Centre Director at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Centre, where she has implemented innovative approaches to patient care and operational excellence.
Dr. Singh provided an in-depth exploration of sleep disorders, emphasizing their prevalence and impact on overall health. She discussed the importance of accurate diagnosis and the role of sleep studies in identifying various sleep-related conditions. The lecture covered a range of treatment options for sleep disorders, including lifestyle modifications, pharmacological interventions, and surgical procedures. Dr. Singh highlighted the significance of personalized treatment plans tailored to individual patient needs. A focal point of the lecture was the use of Mandibular Advancement Devices in managing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Dr. Singh explained how MADs function by repositioning the lower jaw to maintain an open airway during sleep. She presented evidence supporting the efficacy of MADs, particularly for patients with mild to moderate OSA who may not tolerate continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. Drawing from her clinical experience, Dr. Singh shared case studies demonstrating the successful application of MADs in diverse patient populations. She addressed common challenges associated with MAD therapy, such as device comfort and patient adherence, and discussed strategies to overcome these obstacles. She concluded the lecture by exploring emerging trends in sleep medicine, including advancements in diagnostic tools and treatment technologies and emphasized the need for ongoing research to enhance patient outcomes and expand therapeutic options.
The lecture took place in Lecture Hall-1 2nd Floor, SDC&H from 2pm onwards which was attended by 1st and 2nd year postgraduate students and staff of Dept of Prosthodontics, OMFS and Orthodontics along with students and staff of BSM college of Nursing.
