Dentistry which originated as an art of removing painful teeth in ancient Chinese civilization gradually developed into a very intricate science particularly in the west and continued as a measure to get rid of diseased teeth and replace them artificially. Though prevalent in the Indian continent since long, dentistry made rapid progress in the 80s and with the relaxation on import of material and equipment, modern dentistry in India got a fillip with access to state of the art imported equipment and materials which vastly helped to bring the status of this science at par with elsewhere in the world. As dental education in the country burgeoned to a more purposeful form, post graduate training in different specialities of dentistry flourished. State of the art treatment facilities came up along side a nationwide awareness campaign launched by various agencies targeting different social age groups. An average Indian has begun to value the necessasity of seeking treatment for teeth maladies having become conscious of the value of conserving teeth. The disadvantage of tooth loss has also made its impact and people now know how important it is to get missing teeth replaced to stay healthy.
In the urban areas awareness about different dental specialities is now common and patients have the advantage of seeking specialized dental treatment according to their specific needs. The Prosthodontist has now emerged as a specialist who can provide artificial substitutes to lost teeth in various forms i.e either fixed or removable. The Prosthodontist on his part has learnt newer techniques to be able to cater to needs of a larger variety of patients and thus endeavoured to enhance his social utility.
