Carbohydrates are one of three biomolecules along with proteins and fats that our body requires daily. We consume carbohydrates in different forms like glucose, fructose, sucrose, lactose, starch, etc. They provide energy for every metabolic process taking place inside our body. Other than our physical activities they fuel your brain, kidneys, heart muscles, and central nervous system. We can not digest fibers, which is a carbohydrate but they aid in digestion, and satisfies our hunger without giving calories, and also keep blood cholesterol levels in check.
Our body can store extra carbohydrates in your muscles and liver to be used in between meals. The importance of carbohydrates in the diet can be understood by the fact that low blood glucose level can cause giddiness, further low may lead to fainting, and if very low a person can go into a coma or even death.
Dietary recommendation suggests that one should consume a minimum of 130 grams of carbohydrates by adults 175 grams for pregnant women and 210 grams for breastfeeding women. The Dietary Guidelines for the consumption of fibers suggest that women should consume 25 grams while men should consume 38 grams of fiber daily.
One should avoid added sugar, processed foods, refined grains (like white bread), sodas, other sugary drinks, and sweets as much as possible. To help look and feel your best, one should choose nutrient-dense healthy carbohydrates.
