The general population is not very familiar with a subset of dermatological illnesses that can be uncomfortable and even fatal. Pemphigus vulgaris is one of these illnesses, and that is what I'm going to talk about in today's piece.
I'd like to start by providing you with some statistics regarding how frequently this disease affects the general population. In the general community, pemphigus vulgaris affects 0.7–5 persons per 1,000,000 per year. Although this disease is not particularly prevalent, it can have crippling effects, making a false diagnosis dangerous for the individual who genuinely has it.
So what is pemphigus?
Pemphigus is an uncommon form of chronic blistering skin disease brought on by the body's immune system attacking itself. Autoimmune illnesses fall under this category, and in this situation, your immune system is producing antibodies against your skin, more especially the epidermis. This demonstrates that the illness is not contagious and cannot be spread between persons by any method of transmission (i.e. blood, fluids). Any age can experience it, but middle-aged or older folks are more likely to do so.
Pemphigus vulgaris: This form of pemphigus causes blisters that typically begin in the mouth before spreading to the skin or the mucous membranes of the genitalia (i.e. vagina, urethra, and underside of the foreskin). If it is not treated right once, there may also be significant impairment, nail loss, and skin pigment changes. The condition known as pemphigus vulgaris does not go away on its own. Active therapy is required to manage flare-ups and lessen subsequent consequences.
What should you look out for ?
In the mouth and other areas of the skin, pemphigus causes severe blistering. Your skin may at times easily peel off, which can raise infection risk, cause dehydration, and cause deformity. The blistering might burn, have intense itching, and be quite painful.
Also typical of the illness is the sort of blister you develop: large, flaccid bullae that are prone to rupture. This indicates that the blisters are rarely going to occur because they burst virtually almost away. There are numerous, superficial, ulcerated ulcers all over the mouth as a result of the rupturing blisters. The more typical symptom that people initially notice is these uncomfortable sores.
