How to Reduce Your Child's Dental Fear
It's common for kids to have some anxiety before going to the dentist for the first time. After all, the dentist's office is a strange place with strange people, strange sounds, and strange tools!
It's perfectly normal and natural for children to be afraid of the dentist. However, just because your child's fear of the dentist is common doesn't imply that nothing can be done to help them feel more at ease. There are several ways you may assist your child in overcoming their fear of the dentist!
Here are some ways to help ease your child’s dental anxiety:
1. Describe to your child the significance of routine dental visits to everyone.
It will be much more difficult to convince your youngster to go to the dentist if they don't understand why they need to. Consider displaying to your child images of people with stunning, wholesome smiles that are the product of routine maintenance.
Try to convince your kid that their dentist has their best interests in mind. Dentists are here to help kids smile for the rest of their lives with healthy, attractive teeth.
2. Explain how the dentist examines and cleans teeth using positive words.
Your youngster is more likely to perceive dental checkups as favourable if you paint a pleasant picture of them. Try framing the procedure as a straightforward check-up when their dentist 'counts' each tooth (instead of inspecting it) and'removes the worm' from each tooth (instead of preparing cavities).
The perception that going to the dentist is enjoyable rather than dreaded can be created by using language that portray dental visits as more of an experience than a chore.
3. After the first few dental visits, treat your youngster.
Rewarding your child for a job well done is one of the best methods to help them overcome their fear of the dentist. Inform your child in advance that a treat will be waiting for them following the dentist's office! A new toy, more time on the playground, an additional episode of their favourite TV or going to the movies on the weekend may be the incentive.
4. Make up a dental appointment at home!
Show how your dentist typically cleans your teeth by demonstrating one of your personal dental visits. Your youngster may feel more at ease before their appointment if they are aware that their mother or father also sees the dentist.
To help your child become more accustomed to the examination and cleaning procedure, use their toothbrush or the tip of a floss stick to 'clean' and 'check' their teeth.
5. Use tools to help your youngster become familiar with the procedure, such as books and movies.
To assist your child overcome their fear of the dentist, there are many children's books and films on YouTube that you can read to them or show them attractive illustrations from. It can't be that horrible if their favourite YouTuber or book character visits the dentist, right?
