Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic, progressive, precancerous condition, predominantly found in the Indian subcontinent, affecting the oral cavity, pharynx, and occasionally the larynx. First described by Schwartz in 1952, its primary cause is areca nut consumption, commonly in gutka and pan masala. Surgical treatment involves bilateral resection of fibrous bands, coronoidectomy, and third molar removal. The platysma myocutaneous flap (PMF), introduced by Futrell in 1978, is a preferred reconstruction option due to its accessibility, pliability, one-stage reconstruction, and minimal donor site morbidity.
