Tongue-tie (medical term: ankyloglossia) is a condition where the small piece of tissue under the tongue, called the frenulum, is too tight, thick, or short. This limits the tongue's ability to move freely.
Common signs of tongue-tie:
- In babies: Difficulty breastfeeding, as the baby might have trouble in feeding effectively.
- In children: Issues with speech, such as trouble pronouncing certain sounds.
- In adults: Difficulty in speech ,sticking the tongue out fully.
Treatment:
If tongue-tie causes problems, a simple procedure called a frenectomy is done.
A frenectomy is a minor surgical procedure to remove or modify a small fold of tissue in the mouth called the frenulum. This tissue connects certain parts of the mouth, such as:
- Under the tongue (lingual frenulum): If it's too tight or short (a condition called tongue-tie), it can affect speech or the ability to move the tongue properly.
- Inside the upper lip (labial frenulum): If it's too thick or tight, it may cause a gap between the front teeth or affect the way the lip moves.
The procedure is very simple and usually quick.
